A Polish girl will promote Europe

Project of a Polish student is close to winning in the contest for the EU poster propagating the Europe Day 2010 – writes “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”.

The favourite in the contest for the poster commissioned by the EU is a student of the Poznań ASP Maria Mileńko. The jury has chosen from 1700 works 10 best projects, which it is possible to vote for on the website www.designeurope2010.eu.

The position of the Pole doesn’t seem to be threatened because her poster has already gained more than 300 thousand points, the next Portuguese project has 133 thousand of them. The plebiscite is going to last till the 31th of January. The winning project will be released in thousands of exemplars and distributed in the whole EU. The Europe Day is planned, like every year, for the beginning of May – “DGP” announces.

Poznan Nightlife

There’s good news for party lovers arriving in Poznan. In fact Poznan is considered at the very forefront of electro and dance music in Poland. Great news then for dance freaks; if making shapes to the latest sub-genre of house is your bag baby, then you can’t go far wrong with nights out at the likes of Cute, Kukabura and SQ Club.

For those that would rather listen to a car alarm than stomach another night of techno there’s no need to fear either – Poznan has a traditional party atmosphere that few cities its size can match. The Rynek is the centre of the action, and during the warmer months the heart of Poznan is crowded with sippers drinking up the sun along with their beer. Places like Tapas, Pod Minogi, Lizard King and Brovaria blur the lines between restaurant, bar, and club and provide for many a legendary late night out. The latter two are also good choices for live music.

Whereas the Rynek can rightfully be considered the central hub of Poznan’s nightlife, there’s plenty of venues scattered elsewhere in the Old Town for those prepared to delve. Check out Kisielice, Dragon and Czytelnia for some authentic artsy anarchy. Other favourites within party-goers of all kinds include Proletaryat, the obligatory Commie-themed bar, The Dubliner, the obligatory Irish bar and Tuba, the obligatory meatmarket with lasers, girls and commercial hits!

‘Poznań may attract Western producers and facilitate Eastward expansion to our companies’ Piotr Barełkowski, Poznan Mexdia Expo Programme Council Secretary General, says. A meeting between the representatives of regional funds for film production will be a key point of the event. Their presence may inspire Western producers to choose locations in Poland for their films.

Poznan Travel Tips

Here are a few things to bear in mind during your stay in Poznan:

  • Avoid taking a taxi straight from the taxi rank. Calling for one will cost a considerable amount less. Also, ask for a code and stick to one firm. This will reduce the cost of your fare again.
  • Avoid changing your money at Bureaux de Change in the town centre unless you want to hand a complete stranger an early Christmas present -> the rates can be awful.
  • Tipping is not expected. No self-respecting waiter will turn away a few extra zloty, but you won’t get the customary grimace if you don’t. You’re not guaranteed a smile if you do either.
  • Unlike in the UK, pubs don’t close at 11. Most just about get going then. Follow your nose, ears or the crowds to the next bar or club. Beware the mad dogs!
  • Poland has adopted its own uniquely confusing symbols for differentiating public toilets for men and women. Remember, too, that you may well have to pay. The circle is for women, the triangle for men!
  • Poles are passionate about their food. Throw away your preconceptions about miserable eastern bloc stews, and be prepared for a great surprise.

Poland’s Oldest Dog Celebrates Birthday

Poland’s oldest dog – quite possibly the oldest woofer in the world – celebrated his 25th birthday in Poznan over the weekend in the company of two four-legged female admirers.

Minius, who was rescued some 25 years ago by the animal aid foundation Zwierzęta i My (Animals and Us), was presented with a special cake for his anniversary, which he shared with his two friends.

Of course, as Minius was plucked from the Poznan streets, it’s impossible to know when his true birthday actually is. He could actually be a mighty 26 or 27, making him quite possibly the oldest dog on the planet.

His current owner says that Minius; a mixed breed, is still in good shape, but enjoys sleeping for much of the day. Happy Birthday Minius, and as they say in Poland, may you live for a hundred years – or rather 700 in dog time!

Haiti: Auch Polen hilft

Deutsche Bahn will in Polen fahren
